How Terra Solutions Minimises Stress for Live Feeders

At Terra Solutions, we believe that the welfare of our live feeder insects isn’t just an ethical consideration — it’s a quality one. Stressed insects are less nutritious, less active, and less likely to arrive in good condition. Everything we do is designed to minimise stress at every stage of the process.

Why Feeder Insect Welfare Matters

It might seem unusual to talk about the welfare of feeder insects, but the science is clear: stress has a measurable impact on insect physiology. Stressed insects:

  • Deplete their energy reserves rapidly, reducing nutritional value
  • Produce stress hormones that can affect their gut content
  • Are more susceptible to disease and die-off
  • Are less active on delivery — reducing their appeal as prey items

A calm, well-fed insect is a nutritious, active insect. That’s what your reptile deserves.

How We Minimise Stress

1. Appropriate Housing Density

Overcrowding is one of the primary causes of stress in feeder insects. We maintain appropriate stocking densities for each species — locusts need space and airflow, silkworms need clean, uncrowded conditions, and mealworms need adequate substrate depth.

2. Consistent Temperature Management

Each species is kept at its optimal temperature range. Locusts are kept warm (22–28°C), mealworms are stored cool to slow development, and silkworms are maintained at a stable room temperature. Temperature fluctuations are a major stressor — we avoid them.

3. Regular, Quality Feeding

All our insects are fed daily on appropriate, nutritious food. Locusts receive fresh greens, silkworms are fed on mulberry-based chow, and mealworms have access to bran and fresh vegetables. Hungry insects are stressed insects — and nutritionally depleted ones.

4. Gut-Loading Before Every Delivery

In the 24–48 hours before delivery, all insects receive a final gut-load of high-nutrition food. This maximises their nutritional value at the point of feeding and ensures they arrive in peak condition.

5. Personal, Direct Delivery

We don’t use couriers. Every order is delivered personally by us, in a controlled vehicle, directly to your door. No sorting depots, no overnight boxes, no temperature extremes. The journey from our facility to your home is as short and stress-free as possible.

The Result

Insects that arrive alive, active, and nutritionally primed — every time. That’s our standard, and it’s why we deliver personally rather than shipping.
